Album: Week 95

Happy New Year!

Tonight, I taught Joshua how to count down from 10, and then say "Happy New Year!". He's got 1 to 10 down pat, but he's not really getting the 10 to 1. No matter, he loves shouting "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" even though he has absolutely no idea what it means. He loves running to me after I shout happy new year, and then giving me a "big hug".

Tonight, before bed, he was reading his magazines and he saw a gold fish in the magazine. He said "Hi Goldfish! Happy New Year!".

So on behalf of Joshua, Tim, myself and Baby J v.2.0, "Happy New Year!" and all the best in 2009.

Christmas Fun with Joshua

We installed a light switch under the Christmas tree to turn on the lights.

J: *crawls under the tree to turn on the switch*
J: Turn on.
*lights go on*
J: Pretty! Pretty!

Fun with Joshua

As some of you know, Joshua took a liking to Motrin (infant ibuprofen) a few weeks ago when he was sick. Since then, I've stashed the bottle, but he managed to locate it tonight while playing with "Gamma". He held the bottle and brought it to me.

J: Motrin, eat.
Me: No, you only have Motrin when you're sick. Are you sick?
J: *fake coughing*

-------------

Joshua's newest favourite game is Hide and Seek. He loves being the Seeker, but have no patience for hiding. He likes to request a game of "hide seek" whenever we are home. Because of all the games, he got very good at counting from one to ten, all by himself!! He'll usually count to five or six by himself, then we'll prompt him for "seben, eight, nine" and then he'll yell "TEN, GO!" and then gleefully run around the house looking for us. It makes for good exercise. :)

Overheard, Part 2

For the past few days, Josh has been sick. I've been dutifully giving him Motrin to reduce his fever.

Me: It's Motrin time!
J: Motrin!
J (while he's sucking it up from the syringe): Good!*
Me: All done now.
J: More! More!
Me: No more for now, maybe later if you still have a fever.
J: Please**?

Tonight, he fell asleep clutching the Motrin bottle.

---------

Me: Josh, where is Grandma and Grandpa?
J: Hong Kong.

---------

On a different note, it looks like Joshua is going to have a little brother.
We had a girls name picked out, but not a boys one, so we have been throwing around a few names to test them out.

Me: What's the baby's name?
J: Josh.

There you have it. Josh, and Josh 2.

Before he went out this afternoon.

J: Forgot.
Me: What did you forget, baby?
J: Money.

Sunday Morning Swim

J has been in the guardian swim program at a nearby community centre since he was really young. In the past two weeks, he has developed a real aversion to getting in the pool. On the car ride there, and while in the change room, he seems happy enough to be heading to the pool. It seems that when Letty takes him into the pool, he starts his "Nononono" and "Outoutout" chants. This week it escalated to crying and really latching onto Letty's neck. I'm not sure what spooked him of the water. Maybe it's because he has been sick...

Sit

Josh's new word is "sit" now. He loves ordering us around to sit in different places. He'll often point to the couch and say "mama, sit!!!" and then pat the couch and demand that I sit there. It's so cute. At night, he loves to go hide in Tim's walk in closet. Then he'll call us in, pat the floor beside him, and say "mama, sit." And "dada, sit." Then he'll point to the door and say "close!" and Tim will have to close the door. Then the three of us will sit in the closet indefinitely. If we try to stand up, he'll demand that we "sit!" again.

Shoes

Grandma bought him some Chinese flash cards from Hong Kong. I was showing him the shoes one today and the following conversation transpired.

Me: Hai zi!
J: nononono. Shoes!

Hot Sauce

Josh learned to say hot sauce today.

One of his favourite things to do is to get us to open up the fridge, so he can examine all the condiments inside. He loves picking up the tabasco sauce.

Me: That's hot sauce.
J: Hot sauce! (except it sounds like "ot suss")
Me: Don't put it in your mouth, or else you'll get an ouch. (He knows to say ouch when something hurts.)
J: *examines the bottle* Hot sauce!
*puts bottle to his face*
J: cold!
*perplexed look, because clearly, the bottle is not hot!*

Josh's Word of the Day

"Mole"

He seems to pick up odd words that Letty and I would use on a daily basis. Last week, he started to get really interested in "Baga" -- his word for garbage. He loved to take used tissues and say "Baga, baga" until we open the garbage for him to throw it in.

This week, the word is "Mole", as in "there's a mole on Daddy's face and I love to poke it". Little does he know that he has a mole of his very own, it's just not easy for him to see and poke at (thankfully).

Understanding Remorse

Last night during storytime, I let Joshua play with one of the old novels I have floating around my night table. He was very enamored with it, and with the idea of a big book, with only words, and no pictures. He wanted Daddy and I to read it to him. He was busy flipping through the pages, when suddenly, a huge rip startled him. He had ripped one of the pages of the book. He immediately knew he did something wrong. In the past, when something like this happened, he would grin and continue on. But last night, he stopped short and stared at the book. Then at me. And he said “uh-oh” in a very quiet voice. He kept staring at the book and saying “uh-oh” in that quiet voice a few more times. I reassured him that it was ok and that he needed to be gentle next time. Even after Tim told him to kiss Mommy sorry (which he did), and took the book away saying “Daddy will fix it”, he still felt remorseful. I think if he could, he would have said “I’m sorry”.

This is the first time I’ve actually seen him express any remorse for his actions, and I’m pleasantly surprised. I know he knows the difference between right and wrong. But he has never actually felt badly about a wrongful action. It was heartbreaking to see him be upset, but I was also happy to see his range of emotions expanding. I think remorse for one’s action is an important and hard concept to grasp, and I’m truly surprised to see this in my 16.5 month old.

Funny Josh-isms

Some funny things that Joshua can now do/say:

When asked where his nose is, he will shove his finger up his nose. :)

He likes to call all food that he can pick up "buf". This is because we started giving him these rice puffs (I call them "puffs"). He can't pronounce the double f, so he just started saying "buf". Now everything is "buf". Cheerios are buf. Grapes are buf. Tofu pieces are buf. Banana is still nana. :)

He knows a certain male body part and will point to it when asked where it is.

Words that he can say:
Mama
Dada
Up
Buf (as covered above)
Nana (banana)
Baa (sheep)
Wow wow (dog)
Da (duck)
Meow (cat)
Bye
Ga (goat), or for going out ("street")
Ra (rabbit)
Ap (apple)

Words that he can sign:
Bye/hi
Thank you
More
Finished
Milk
Flowers
Duck (quack)
Fish
Spider
Butterfly
Plane (although he hasn't done it recently)
